COSHH Essentials Course Released

The library of elearning courses included in Nimble+ continues to grow – the newest addition is COSHH Essentials

Many workplaces will need to consider Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) during their work. COSHH isn’t just for those who work in a laboratory – most catering roles will require the use of some cleaning products, and those with jobs in health and beauty, such as hairdressers, will often work with substances which need to be treated with care.

“Every year, thousands of workers suffer from illnesses caused by hazardous substances in the workplace. Exposure to these chemicals can lead to serious health issues and cost businesses, society, and individuals millions of pounds each year. You might think that you’re not working with anything particularly dangerous, but the truth is that many of the products we use on a daily basis can pose a risk to our health if not handled correctly.” – COSHH Essentials course

This interactive elearning course will help your teams to understand what COSHH is and why it is necessary – whether your workplace feels high-risk or low-risk, there’s always something to be mindful of to ensure you minimise any risks to yourself and your colleagues.

“Whether you work in healthcare, manufacturing, hospitality, or any other sector, the COSHH regulations are designed to protect you from the potential health risks posed by hazardous substances. The COSHH Essentials course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to handle hazardous substances safely. By taking this course, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the potential risks involved and learn how to protect yourself and others in the workplace.” – Rachel, Nimble Learning Design Team

The course is divided into topics to break up the content – in total it takes 35 minutes to complete all the learning, which can be taken in one session or one topic at a time if preferred.

Mental Health Essentials

The course introduction shows learners the ways in which substances can enter our body through different routes of exposure, and it gives examples of how our health can be affected by different chemicals in different ways. Learners can consider the risks associated with different workplaces and roles, as well as how employers and employees each have responsibilities for staying safe.

Hazards and risks looks at the chemical hazard symbols we might find on packaging, and what it tells us about the potential dangers of the substance we’re working with. It also describes how Safety Data Sheets and COSHH risk assessments are additional resources that can be used to help teams decide the safest way to use chemicals.

The final topic staying safe goes through control measures which may need to be put in place, such as eliminating a hazardous substance, replacing it with a less harmful alternative, or using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as a last resort when other control measures are not enough.

The elearning ends with a short assessment which can reassure learners that they’ve taken in the key information and gives results to show you when your teams have successfully completed the course.

By the end of the elearning course, learners should be able to:

  • Explain what COSHH is and why it’s important in the workplace
  • Identify and interpret the hazard symbols used in COSHH
  • Recognise hazardous substances you might encounter at work and understand their risks to your health
  • Use control measures and safe handling to minimise your exposure to hazardous substances

It’s CPD certified, giving you the assurance that completing this training counts towards your annual professional development.
