Lone Working Essentials Course Released

More than a quarter of the UK workforce are now classed as lone workers – individuals who carry out tasks without close or direct supervision. Delivery drivers, community midwives, tradespeople, night receptionists, surveyors, estate agents, traffic wardens or just anyone working from home – the list of lone workers is extensive! While lone working offers flexibility, independence, and the chance to manage your own time, it also comes with unique challenges. You’ll need to be aware of additional risks when working on your own, and how to manage those risks, plus, of course, what support you should expect from your employer.

In this forty-minute course, you’ll learn about different types of risks you might face as a lone worker, illustrated with real-life case studies. You’ll explore practical steps for safer lone working and know what to do in tricky situations, whatever your role.

“Remote working has increased significantly in recent years, yet many of us don’t recognise ourselves as ‘lone workers’. This means we often overlook the risks associated with working in isolation. The Lone Working Essentials course throws a spotlight on common threats faced by lone workers and demonstrates how remote employees can prioritise wellbeing, safety and security at all times.” Shaena, Learning Designer

In the first topic, Introduction, we take a look at the definition of lone working (because you don’t have to be totally alone to be a lone worker!) and explore the different types of roles that you might be doing. You’ll also find out about your employers’ obligations under the law, and your own responsibilities as a worker.

After the introductory topic lays the groundwork, the common risks topic makes it really clear exactly what challenges you might face as a lone worker. You’ll find out about physical, environmental, security and psychological risks, from simple things – like poor weather while you’re out on the road – to more worrying situations such as experiencing a serious health incident while alone. You’ll also be encouraged to reflect on potential feelings of loneliness or isolation that can come to the fore when you’re working on your own.

In the third topic, you’ll learn about risk management – how to identify and prepare for adverse situations, using the Lone Worker Risk Matrix to assess the likelihood and severity of common risks. There are plenty of practical tips and steps you can take for safer lone working, all brought to life with case studies and examples.

The course ends with a short assessment that checks your understanding of the learning objectives covered.
