Newly Updated Data Protection Essentials Course Released

Personal data has never been more valuable… or potentially more vulnerable! With the rise of smart technology, AI and automated processing, and the constant collection of ‘big data’ from wearables, homes, vehicles and online services, the amount of personal information being generated has grown rapidly. While this brings huge benefits, it also creates additional risks.

Data theft has become more prolific, and attacks more sophisticated. Last year alone over 12,000 data breaches were confirmed globally, putting millions of individuals at risk. Data protection laws have had to evolve to better reflect the innovations of today. The new Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 seeks to modernise and bolster existing data regulations, including the UK GDPR, by simplifying rules for organisations, strengthening protections for individuals, and increasing enforcement powers.

Any company that works with personal data has a legal duty to ensure staff understand the principles of safe, secure and lawful data handling, and that they know how to follow the latest guidelines on best practice.

This 50 minute Data Protection Essentials course addresses recent legislative updates and explains the core framework of effective data protection. It offers usable advice on putting theory into practice through interactive, multimedia case studies and real-world examples, addressing common challenges and making this often-complex topic easier to understand and apply.

“Many breaches don’t occur because of sophisticated hacks alone – they often start with everyday human error. A misplaced email. A weak password. A misunderstanding about what data can be shared and when. An awareness of the core do’s and don’ts of data protection is essential to protecting individuals and organisations from harm and costly repercussions. Just as important is the ability to recognise when a mistake has been made and how to seek the right help promptly. This course can help with that!” Shaena, Learning Designer

In the first topic, Introduction, explores and defines personal data and why it must be protected. Using video and interactive exercises, it encourages learners to consider their own personal data, the risks to its safety, and the individual rights we all have to ensure our data is being handled responsibly.

Topic two, Data protections, sets out the UK’s strong data protection framework, highlighting recent regulatory updates and the core principles of data protection, as well as providing a simple overview of lawful bases and sensitive data types. It includes real-life examples of data breaches and the most common reasons they occur.

The final topic Working with data, focuses on the practical application of data protection best practice in everyday roles. Through interactive exercises, it explores remits and responsibilities, and looks at how employees should interact with data from collection through to deletion. The topic includes tips on taking card payments and working with AI tools, and provides downloadable guidance on how to report data breaches, as well as looking at how to handle complaints and Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs) in line with data regulations.

The course concludes with a short assessment that checks learners’ understanding of the key learning objectives.

Ensuring a strong culture of data protection has never been more important. Anyone working with personal information must keep up with legal requirements, understand their responsibilities, and apply everyday practices that prevent breaches and protect both individuals and organisations from harm or foul play.
