This 50 minute Data Protection Essentials course addresses recent legislative updates and explains the core framework of effective data protection. It offers usable advice on putting theory into practice through interactive, multimedia case studies and real-world examples, addressing common challenges and making this often-complex topic easier to understand and apply.

In the first topic, Introduction, explores and defines personal data and why it must be protected. Using video and interactive exercises, it encourages learners to consider their own personal data, the risks to its safety, and the individual rights we all have to ensure our data is being handled responsibly.
Topic two, Data protections, sets out the UK’s strong data protection framework, highlighting recent regulatory updates and the core principles of data protection, as well as providing a simple overview of lawful bases and sensitive data types. It includes real-life examples of data breaches and the most common reasons they occur.
The final topic Working with data, focuses on the practical application of data protection best practice in everyday roles. Through interactive exercises, it explores remits and responsibilities, and looks at how employees should interact with data from collection through to deletion. The topic includes tips on taking card payments and working with AI tools, and provides downloadable guidance on how to report data breaches, as well as looking at how to handle complaints and Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs) in line with data regulations.
The course concludes with a short assessment that checks learners’ understanding of the key learning objectives.
